Create a strong username and password
The best way to secure your personal information is by creating unique usernames and passwords for each website and mobile app for which you sign in. Avoid using generic language, or common phrases or names when creating your username. Strong passwords should include the use of capital letters, numbers and symbols. It's best if passwords do not include personal information or dates, and are created randomly.

Sign for Your Purchases
When making a purchase, you may be asked "Debit or Credit."

By choosing "Debit" you're opting to use your personal identification number (PIN). Your transaction will be deducted from your checking account immediately.

When choosing "Credit," you'll verify your identity with your signature. By doing this, a preauthorization may be placed for the amount of your transaction on your account and your transaction will run through the Visa network.

Don't Provide Your Information to Others via Phone
Unless you've initiated the communication, never provide your personal or financial information over the phone or online. Scammers are getting sophisticated and may pose as legitimate businesses or organizations on the phone or online trying to get you to provide your card or account number, or other sensitive information.

Be wary of providing your information to others if you did not initiate contact.

Trust Your Gut
Never underestimate your intuition or gut feeling. If a situation feels off, don't be afraid to ask more questions, or stop a transaction/phone call and walk away. You can always initiate a call to the business or organization to confirm or complete a transaction.

If you've already provided your information to someone in a potential fraud situation, be sure to contact the Credit Union so we can take the appropriate measures to protect your account.
